L’OPÉRA
French architect Odile Decq designed the spaces of the Palais Garnier restaurant, “L’Opéra”, which opened in 2010. The project continues the history of the Palais Garnier. In 1875, Charles Garnier stated in his “final project” that he wished to create a restaurant in the Rotonde du Glacier. In 1973 and again in 1992, two further attempts failed. After 136 years of waiting, Charles Garnier’s wish was fulfilled on 27 June 2010, in the very place where subscribers were historically dropped off by carriage to enter the auditorium. Odile Decq, architect: “Creating a restaurant in the Opéra Garnier is not a conventional thing to do — nor am I. Naturally very curious, everything interests me as long as I have not yet done it, because I like to push things ever further. I work very intuitively while carrying out an extremely detailed analysis of the constraints.”
The fittings are perfectly distinct from the historic elements and fully reversible, and the two coexist superbly, leaving no one indifferent. The architectural quality and the care taken in resolving the technical constraints were also praised by the Commission nationale des Monuments Historiques.
